57 | 5 Money-Making Activities Your Band Can Do Right Now (Without Shows or Crowd-Funding)

Show Notes

In a time when playing live is out of the question and your audience may not be big enough for Patreon or crowdfunding, here’s 5 money-making activities your band can do RIGHT NOW so get that dough bro!

  1. Plug your Bandcamp

Bands forget to sell. Bandcamp are doing monthly “BandCamp Fridays” where they don’t take a cut from any of the music sold. Last one was Friday just passed (7th August) the following are:

Bandcamp Fridays 2020 Calendar:

August 7, 2020
September 4, 2020
October 2, 2020
November 6, 2020
December 4, 2020

“Many of your fans are actively looking for ways to support you through this crisis. For example, in our first three Bandcamp Fridays, limited edition t-shirts, 7-inch and 12-inch singles, charity releases and re-releases, and tote-bag bundles (!!) were popular with fans. If you don’t have new music or merch, fans love live recordings and early demos, and this is a good time to release them on Bandcamp. We’re also seeing artists offering music production services, as well as video hangouts, lessons, and gear tutorials (these can all be listed as merch items).” – Bandcamp

Bonus tip: Enable option to purchase whole discography as a bundle. My band only has 1x Ep and 1x Stand-Alone single at this point and people regularly buy them as a bundle.

  1. Print on Demand Merch

Allows you to have exciting and fresh designs. Your cut is smaller than traditional merch printing, but you sell more because there is more variety AND you can bundle stuff as well which is a super good sales technique.  I’ve seen bands bundling hand sanitiser!

I have an affiliate deal with Imprint Merch for Australian artists and bands which entitles you to 10% off. If you’re interested you just need to email me at contact@monicastrut.com and I’ll hook you up with the discount!

  2. Tidy up your band’s finances to find leaks.

This isn’t an obvious money-making exercise but lots of payments can slip through the cracks when they’re coming in through various sources.

Starting a joint band bank account has been a game changer for my band and we each put in a set amount per week so we’re never scraping together funds to cover various expenses.

  3. Song Royalties

    a) Have you registered all your shows and songs with your local royalty collecting society? Everyone is worried about making more money but those people (and I’ve been one of them in the past) could be leaving money on the table!  So check this.

    b) Actively go out and try and get some radio play for your tracks.

AMRAP for those in Australia distributes to community radio with only one form.  But if you’re overseas, can you reach out to radio and try and promote your latest single using a press release (there should be info on each stations website how they prefer submissions).

My PR Course will teach you how to reach out and write a press-release effectively. Try and do this for a really recent release as it makes more sense.

  4. Start a Side-Hustle

For me I was a music journo + social media manager + musician for many years and which led to my consulting business for bands on marketing and promo. You might be a guitar teacher, want to start your own clothing line or be an accountant wanting to specialise in the music industry!

If you want to learn how to start and run a successful online business that will support your band’s endeavours, you need to sign up to my free 2-part workshop, ‘Create Your Hell Yeah Business.’ You can do so here – https://monicastrut.com/hellyeahbiz/

    It’s gonna be good!
