Firstly, I realise the title of this blog post is super creepy. But it really does sum up the (positive) story I wanted to share with you all.
A few years ago I was watching a band at a local venue. There were 5 of us in the group I was with. Aside from us, the audience consisted of 2 eager punters towards the front of the stage, the sound guy and the sweet sound of music reverberating off the walls. There may as well have been a stray dog chasing a tumbleweed at the back of the room.
Ordinarily, this is a situation many bands dread; Playing a show to an almost-empty venue. In fact, there were more people on stage than in the audience! This situation is one I’m sure we can all relate to. Keeping your energy high in these situations can be a massive struggle but we know as professionals, we know we must.
But what if I told you the people I was with were a record label owner, successful band manager, owner of a big heavy music publication and booking agent from Europe? Would that change your view?
This situation happened and when I looked at it from the potential perspective of the band, it completely changed my views on not only how we show up at our gigs, but how we show up online.
The band had no way of knowing these key industry players were in the room and I’m pleased to say they pulled off one hell of a show despite the disappointing turn-out (and these industry peeps were really only interested in the music and performance at the end of the day).
The thing is, you NEVER know who is watching. You never know who in the audience – both on and offline – will one day present your band a small or big opportunity that could significantly supercharge your career.
